A licensed certified public accountant in the state of New York, Dr. Myrna L. Fischman is also a professor emerita who taught at Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn, New York, for 40 years

An accomplished listee, Dr. Fischman celebrates many years’ experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in his field. A licensed certified public accountant in the state of New York, Dr. Fischman is also a professor emerita who taught at Long Island University (LIU) in Brooklyn, New York, for 40 years in the department of finance, accounting and taxation before retiring in 2019. Receiving her tenure as a full professor during her career, she also served as director of the School of Professional Accountancy and the Center for Accounting and Tax Education, was chairman of the department of accounting, coordinator of graduate capstone courses and adviser to the accounting society. Dr. Fischman previously taught courses at Borough of Manhattan Community College and Central Commercial High School in New York City, and continues to maintain her own business as a self-employed accountant in New York City since 1960. Additionally, Dr. Fischman worked for several other companies, including as chief accountant investigator at the District Attorney’s Office in Queens, New York, from 1954 to 1970.

During her illustrious career at LIU, Dr. Fischman developed a 150-hour bachelor/master’s degree accounting program for the Brooklyn campus, the C.W. Post campus and the Southampton College campus, which is approved by the New York State Education Department for preparation of the certified public accountant exam, and formed courses in fraud by utilizing resources given to her from members of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Dr. Fischman also introduced the volunteer income tax assistance IRS program and brought COAP to LIU Brooklyn campus. In recent years, she endowed the Myrna L. Fischman Excellence in Accounting Scholarship.

As a celebrated figure in her field, Dr. Fischman lectured at the 2017 tax seminar alongside 200 of her fellow licensed certified public accountants. She was also editor for the Eastern Business Educators Journal and the Delta Pi Epsilon annual yearbook, reviewer for The CPA Journal, and author of “Who Will Teach our Future CPAs?” which was published in the Trusted Professional.

Through her community, Dr. Fischman has lent her time and expertise in various significant ways. She chaired several committees, including the LOMTO Federal Credit Union #1532 supervisory committee from 1983 to 2016 and was active on the subcommittee on business education and a member of the economic development and marketing committee of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce from 1984 to 2015. She has been involved with the Institute for the Advancement of Criminal Justice as both an accountant and adviser, and with Coalition Development and the Interracial Council for Business Opportunity as an accountant and consultant. Dr. Fischman served in various roles with area educational organizations and schools, a local medical center and several democratic committees as well.

Dr. Fischman is an alumnus of Baruch College, where she acquired a bachelor’s and master’s degree in 1960 and 1964, respectively. She later completed a doctorate degree at New York University. She is a certified public accountant in the state of New York.

To stay abreast in her field, Dr. Fischman has been a member of multiple different industry-related organizations. She is a member, past president of the Brooklyn chapter, former auditing committee member and former board of directors’ member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. She is a member and past president of the New York chapter of the Association of Government Accountants and the American Accounting Association. Furthermore, Dr. Fischman is a member of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, the National Education Association and, among others, the Doctorate Association of New York Educators. Dr. Fischman is also a member of the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and served as president in 2004.

Dr. Fischman received a Meritorious Service Award from the Community Service Society of New York in 1969. She has since been recognized with a Dr. Emanuel Saxe Outstanding CPA in Education Award from the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants for 1994-1995, a Lifetime Achievement Award from Soroptimist International in 1997 and a Special Award for 40 Years of Service to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program from the Internal Revenue Service in 2014. Cited in The CPA Journal, which is published by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, Dr. Fischman is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been cited in over 60 editions of Who’s Who, including Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education and Who’s Who in Finance and Business.
